Cape May Point Beach Patrol
Since its founding in 1910, the Cape May Point Beach Patrol has experienced continual improvement in terms of services provided, preventative lifeguarding tactics, quality of personnel, and competitive efforts. We are the smallest beach patrol in the South Jersey Lifeguard Chief’s Association, yet our performance is equal to that of any patrol.
The Cape May Point Beach Patrol will be giving the 2021 Lifeguard Test on Saturday, June 5, at the Borough Building at the base of the lighthouse. Reporting time is 9:30 AM. The test and interviews are usually over by 1:00 PM. Bring towel, water/sport's drink, and sweat shirt. Running shoes are a must for the mile run up and down Lighthouse Avenue. All candidates must be 16 years of age by the time they actually sit on a stand. Being able to swim and run are essential parts of lifeguarding, so don't underestimate the test.
A change in our June 5, Cape May Point Beach Patrol tryouts. We will qualify just to take the test in the Cape May Elementary School Pool.
You must swim 100 yards at the pool in 1:25 mins or less. If a candidate does not meet the minimum time, that candidate will NOT be able to take the rest of the test.
Test consists of:
1. One (1) mile run on hard surface in 7 mins. 30 seconds or under.
2. Ocean swim approximately 500 meters: timed event under 10 minutes
3. Run-swim-run approximately 500 meters combined; timed event
4. 100 meter soft sand dash; timed event
5. short surf dash; timed event
6. Personal interview with supervisor
If chosen, there will be a week of paid rookie school. Candidates will be certified in CPR, AED, First Aid, BBP, and AEO2 as well as USLA and SJLCA lifeguard certification. Graduation of rookie school is dependent on passing a pool test of 500 meters in 10:00 minutes or less. This is not a CMPBP mandate but is the major SJLChief's and USLA requirement for certification.
Junior Lifeguard Program
The Cape May Point Junior Guard Program, if viable depending on Covid restrictions, will start July 6, 2021 and run for four (4) weeks until July 29th. It will still be three days a week; however, the format may have to be changed slightly. More information will be forthcoming after Mother's Day.
13th Annual Cape May Point Women's Lifeguard Challenge
On Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at 6:30PM female beach patrol members will have the opportunity to participate in the 13th Annual Cape May Point Women's Lifeguard Challenge. This grueling all-women’s triathlon of the sorts will consist of a 1.3 mile soft sand run, 1 mile ocean paddle, and .5 mile ocean swim. Competitors are invited from beach patrols throughout New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and New York.
